Volunteer

Bovey Tracey Swimming Pool is a charity-run outdoor pool. We only pay our lifeguards; everything else involved in operating, maintaining, and managing the pool is done by volunteers.

That volunteer support is what keeps the pool open, safe, welcoming, and affordable for the whole community – from day-to-day practical tasks to behind-the-scenes organisation. Whether you can help occasionally or more regularly, you’ll be making a direct, visible difference.

Why we need volunteers

Running an outdoor pool involves far more than what happens poolside. Each season we need people to help with:

  • welcoming swimmers and families and keeping sessions running smoothly
  • ticketing, kiosk and customer-facing support
  • routine cleaning and practical upkeep
  • repairs and maintenance so facilities stay in good working order
  • charity governance and planning to keep the pool sustainable long-term
  • communications, fundraising, and community engagement

If volunteers weren’t doing this work, the costs would be too high for the pool to operate.

Ways you can help

Kiosk helper (front of house)

A friendly, practical role that makes a huge difference to the day’s atmosphere and how smoothly the pool runs.

What you might do:

  • sell tickets and help manage entry
  • serve refreshments and keep the kiosk tidy and stocked
  • answer basic questions and signpost visitors
  • be a welcoming, front-facing presence for customers

Time commitment: anything from a few hours a couple of times a season to a regular slot.

Maintenance & practical support

If you like fixing things, keeping places running, or bringing hands-on skills, we’d love your help.

What you might do:

  • cleaning and basic upkeep (inside and outside areas)
  • small repairs and odd jobs
  • helping with larger maintenance tasks when needed
  • sharing trade skills or practical know-how (even occasionally)

Time commitment: flexible – from one-off help to joining regular maintenance sessions.

Trustee (charity management)

Trustees help steer the charity and keep the pool sustainable, compliant, and well-run. This is a vital behind-the-scenes role that protects the future of the pool.

What you might do:

  • help oversee finances, planning, governance, and risk
  • support fundraising and long-term development
  • contribute to decision-making and strategy
  • bring professional experience (or simply commitment and good judgement)

Time commitment: typically attending meetings and supporting agreed actions between meetings (varies by role and season).

Offer your skills (whatever they are)

Not sure where you fit? If you have skills you can share, there’s almost certainly a way to use them.

Examples include:

  • social media, photography, design, or website help
  • IT / systems / ticketing support
  • people management, HR, policy writing
  • fundraising, grants, sponsorship, community outreach
  • event planning and volunteer coordination

Even a small bit of specialist help can save the pool time and money.

Volunteering that works for you

You don’t need to be a “pool person” – just willing to help. We’ll do our best to match roles to your availability, interests, and confidence level, and you can start small.
